Your broadband contract is nearing its end, and a representative calls about renewal. Monthly charge, contract term, gifts and bundled services arrive in one stream. You listen and calculate at the same time, and the only line that sticks is: “This offer is only available if you confirm today.”
Most people are not incapable of negotiating. They simply did not organise the information before the call. AI is useful here not as a machine for inventing a competitor quote, and not as a decision-maker, but as a rehearsal partner. It can turn facts you already have into a script, a question list and a comparison table.
Think of shopping for a week of groceries with a list. The list cannot guarantee a discount, but it stops one attractive bundle from replacing your actual priorities. A renewal script serves the same purpose.
Step one: collect facts, not leverage you do not have
Prepare seven items before opening an AI chat:
The end date and notice period in your current contract.
Everything you actually pay for, not just the name of the main service.
Included speed, equipment and additional services.
Real service issues, with dates or records you can verify.
Alternative offers you genuinely received; write “none” if there are none.
Your priority: lowest total cost, shorter commitment, speed or reliability.
Your limit: conditions under which you will wait instead of renewing.
Do not paste account numbers, identity-document data, full addresses or phone numbers into an AI service. A comparison normally needs abstract labels such as Current plan, Option A and One-off charge.
Step two: use one prompt to create four tools
Fill in this template with verified information:
Act as a neutral consumer-contract negotiation coach. Use only the broadband renewal information I provide. Do not invent competitor quotes and do not make legal or financial decisions for me.
My information:
- Current contract end date: <date>
- Current services and actual charges: <information>
- Renewal offer: <information>
- Other verified offers I have: <information / none>
- My priority: <condition>
- My limit: <condition>
Produce four sections:
1. A 90-second opening script that confirms the contract and offer before stating my goal.
2. Four response branches for: “this is our best offer,” “today only,” “the add-on is mandatory,” and “nothing else can be changed.”
3. A comparison table: total cost over the term, one-off charges, mandatory add-ons, my own value for gifts, and terms still to confirm.
4. A post-call message asking the provider to state the final offer in writing.
Mark missing information as To confirm. Do not guess. Keep the tone firm, polite and concise. Use no threats or false statements. The point is not to sound aggressive. The prompt separates four jobs that are easy to blur together: confirm facts, state a goal, handle pressure, and create a written record.
Step three: rehearse a 90-second opening
A usable opening can be as simple as:
Before deciding, I would like to confirm the end date of my current contract, the full term of the offer you just described, and every required charge. I am open to renewing, but my priorities are total cost over the contract and clear terms, not the first month's number alone. Please confirm whether there are one-off charges, mandatory add-ons, or changes after a promotional period. Once I have the complete information, I can decide whether to proceed. The script invents no bargaining power and does not disclose your limit immediately. It moves the conversation from one headline number to the complete terms.
Step four: prepare four response branches
“This is our best offer”
Understood. Does “best” refer to the monthly charge, the total cost over the term, or the included services? If the headline charge cannot change, are there alternatives for the contract length, equipment fee or mandatory add-ons?Do not argue with the word “best.” Ask for the comparison basis.
“You must confirm today”
I need the complete terms before deciding. Can you send the offer, validity period and all charges in writing? If I cannot review them, I will not confirm today.Your boundary is not forcing the provider to extend an offer. It is refusing to commit without enough information.
“The additional service is mandatory”
Please separate the main service and add-on charges, their terms and cancellation conditions. I will only count services I will actually use. Is there an option without this add-on?A gift or bundle only has value when it solves a real need for you.
“Nothing else can be adjusted”
Understood. Please send the final available offer in writing. I will compare its total contract cost and terms with the other verified information I have, then reply about renewal.A negotiation does not have to end in one call. Obtaining comparable information is useful progress.
Compare total cost, not one monthly number
Ask AI to build the table, but verify every input yourself:
Field | What to confirm |
|---|---|
Contract term | Start date, end date and commitment length |
Recurring cost | Main service and every required recurring item |
One-off cost | Installation, equipment, administration or other stated charges |
Promotion | Start, end and attached conditions |
Add-ons | Whether required, duration and cancellation method |
Gifts | Your own value based on whether you will use them |
To confirm | Any claim without written support |
The basic comparison is:
Total contract cost = recurring costs over the term + one-off costs - verified, quantifiable rebatesA gift's list price is not automatically its value to you. If you will not use it, record zero in your personal comparison.
When the information spans several files
Remove personal identifiers, place the relevant text files in a dedicated folder, and give the same read-only instruction to Codex CLI or Claude Code:
List the files you will read and do not modify them. Extract only the contract term, recurring cost, one-off cost, add-ons and terms still to confirm. For every item, cite the source filename and exact sentence. Stop after extraction so I can verify the table before comparison. Both tools can support non-coding document work, but their permissions and flags are not identical. Check the local --help output and grant access only to the folder needed for the task.
Three traps
Ask AI to fabricate a competitor quote. That turns preparation into a false statement. If you have no other offer, say so and focus on getting the current proposal defined clearly.
Chase one lower number. Contract length, one-off charges and unwanted bundles can change the overall result. Compare the full term before the headline monthly charge.
Let AI choose for you. It does not know your cash flow, moving plans or past service experience. It can organise the trade-offs; the decision remains yours.
The final minute before the call
Keep four lines in front of you:
Confirm the contract term and every charge.
State your top priority without disclosing your limit immediately.
Use the prepared branch when a pressure line appears.
Ask for the final offer in writing, then compare and reply.
Negotiation does not require a performance of toughness. Complete facts, short questions and the willingness to pause for verification are enough to keep control of a renewal call.
